Once Mew had rested enough, we took another teleport north in the late afternoon. It was as disorienting as before, but I stayed focused on the destination. I’d already seen what could happen if I got distracted. We came out near a suspicious hole that I guessed was another of the strange mystery dungeons. Mew explained that we were near one of the port towns, a few hours’ walk away, and we set off. Tannis was the slowest in our group with his compact, heavy build, but we were still moving at what seemed like a good pace. No one commented on it, and I guessed it was normal for pokémon to deal with different paces. We did pass several groups of pokémon leaving town at the start of our walk. We could hear them coming before we met, so Mew had me and sometimes Miku split off from the group and hide. The space was full. Everywhere seemed to be a different place, a flat world pulled into three dimensions so all around us looked like a rock magnified many hundreds of times, even the slightest movement sending your view zipping across its microscopic landscape. Peaks and valleys dipped in and out of focus as everything moved in a blur. My sense of movement was all wrong too; my body couldn’t tell how fast or which way it felt like I was going. I held to my connection to Mew; looking through the filter of his thoughts, the scattered landscapes twisted kaleidoscopically until they snapped into a pattern. Hills and streams, with a dark opening in a wall, anchored the rest of the world. I wondered if this was what Ultra Space looked like, but something inside told me that was wrong. Reshiram flared her wings when she reached the valley, braking from rapid flight into a controlled drop. She hit the ground and preened the back of her neck, trying to get the fur to lay flat over the cuts. They’d heal soon, but she hated the feeling of being caught by surprise. We ended up taking shelter in one of the crevices of the canyon wall. Cave would have been too generous (as Miku pointed out) but there was enough space to fit without fear of falling deeper, and it wasn’t visible from the top. It didn’t keep the rain from the darkening clouds off us, but at least it wasn’t cold. We let Miku use what little cover there was so her fur wouldn’t be soaked; my skin and Tannis’s scales would dry much more easily. Mew turned invisible and left to search for food; apparently fruits were common here, with various medicinal properties. Tannis, Miku, and I rested. Night was coming soon—my very first, since the concept didn’t exist in space. Except that I apparently had another life before this, one where I’d been a human. All I noticed at first was the burning heat fading. It was too bright to make out detail, but I was relieved that the pain was going away. In front of me, Reshiram was blazing as intensely as before, but I could take it now. Reshiram looked up at me and glared, heaving for breath. I started backing away. This new form probably used fire, and I didn’t think fire would hurt her at all. Surviving was enough. I turned and started running as well as I could with my injuries. As I moved away from the blaze, the wind started picking up, air rushing toward the fire and against me. I could have pushed through it normally, but I was struggling now to move forward against the wind and my limp. I reached out with my mind. Mew? You’re still alive! I don’t know if I can follow you. Terry died wrong. It’s not polite to say it, maybe. No one ever brings it up. But we all think it. You can hear it in the silences, in the way everyone tried to forget about him as fast as possible, not talk about him and his dying and how it was wrong, like maybe it’s a curse and if they talk about it they’ll die wrong too. We’re not afraid of dying, not really. Everyone dies, for sure. Everything does. Maybe more than usual around here, but what does it really matter? No, what scares us is there’s a right way to go out and a wrong way. You might call it silly, and some days you’d be right, because really you can’t pick how you die most of the time, but that’s just how it is. It’s all about memory. Either they talk about you, or they care about you, or they’d rather forget the whole thing. So Terry, I don’t talk about, but George was a fireman and he died on the job. His family is proud of that, and now that he’s died like that ain’t nothing or no one can touch him. He’s a hero.

There are a lot of reasons not to worry. Some people—the unimaginative ones, who can only see the world in black and white, or maybe red, green, and blue, will tell you that you should not worry because there is nothing to worry about. However, there are good reasons and bad reasons, and this is one of the worst. Worry your way through this one as fast as you can, look for something better. Bam. Next. Some people, slightly more enlightened, will tell you not to worry because you can (and should) prepare. I can appreciate the sentiment, but preparedness is inherently fallacious, like telling someone to expect the unexpected. See, preparing means you need to anticipate, i.e. worry. These people think once they've prepared they can stop worrying, but really all they've done is get more efficient at it. The clock didn't tick. That in itself was unsettling, watching time progress relentlessly, no chance to pause for a breath before the next tick because there were none. Ordinary clocks, the ones with the—whatchamacallit—jumping complications, were better. The tick, the second, happened all at once. Tick. Stop. Tick. Stop. Tick. Stop. Hello, and welcome to my page! Let's see... I'm a college student from the US. I've always kind of enjoyed art (and REALLY enjoyed reading). I grew up in an LDS (Mormon) family and served a mission a few years ago. I love God and Christ and I will stand for them. I know that They are real and that They love us very much. I don't care what people may say these days - I have had prayers answered and seen hearts touched and lives changed. I have a testimony of the Bible and of the Book of Mormon. They both testify of Christ and invite all men everywhere to come to Him. I'm not here for arguments; if you really want to know, ask Him yourself. I can promise He will answer your prayers if you "ask in faith," as James said. That said, if you have questions about the gospel or our church I'll do everything I can to answer them.

Since I got back, I've started writing; my new goal is to be a published author by the time I finish my degree. It's a high goal, but those are the kind that push you to do more. I've gotten back into Pokemon lately, so that's what a lot of my art is about. At the moment, I'm primarily an author, though I do occasional digital art and pixel sprites.

A short preview from the next chapter of PMD: Humanoid! (Don't worry, no spoilers.) For context, the main character is a Deoxys, which is an unknown species in this world. I decided to try talking myself. Rayquaza? Can I ask why you’re after me? The dragon looked down. “You’re a danger to this planet.” The voice thundered, godlike. I tried one more time. I’m not what you think I am. I’m— “I know what you are. I’ve dealt with your kind before.” Wait. Mew said he’d never heard of a pokémon like me. . . There was silence for a few moments. Miku broke it. “Oh, hell.”

On Horizons: A TED talk, maybe

Horizons are an interesting concept, because they are always horizontal. You can laugh, but this is important. We don't have horizons up or down, only sideways. We like them that way. They're exciting, because they're all the way out there as far as we can see—but they're also safe, because we can look at them and say, "That's it. That's where my world ends." We don't have to deal with the stuff beyond that horizon. It's somebody else's problem, at least until it crosses the horizon and becomes our problem. We don't like it when things do that. All this stuff still applies when we're talking about figurative horizons, like, say, scientific horizons. Even when people decided to push the boundaries, we say they're expanding our horizons. The horizon isn't gone, it's just bigger and there's more stuff inside it now. And some of that stuff is usually uncomfortable and scary, and because we just moved the horizon and if we've learned one thing over thousands of years of history, it's
